Effective study tips for exams which will help you pass, not cram.

A lot of students are on the look out for effective study tips for exam. Often times, students, especially those in college, get caught up with a lot of activities; a party here, some football game there and whole lot of other activities happening everywhere. The main point is that students get their plate full and barely notice that time flies and hits them in the face with tons of exams.

Knowing that they don’t have that much time, most students tend to cram and stay up the whole night before the exams. There’s no problem with cramming as long as the student passes the exam but that’s not the case, is it? Not having enough sleep before an exam spells nothing but a failure. The brain also tires out. Plus, you can only put so much into your mind with little time to review. You just can’t push it.

So what do you do if cramming fails you? You look for study tips for exams. Yet before you can implement them, you need to set your priorities straight and free up your schedule. Effective reviews will take time that’s why you always fail when you cram. So first things first, organize your schedule and manage your time efficiently before starting on any studying strategy. After doing so, bear in mind these tips that teach you how to study effectively and efficiently.

Set up Your Schedule (The most important tip by far)
What I do when I’m preparing for exams is to print out calendar from my computer and post it on the wall in order of the months. After this I write in all important dates, including exams, group meetings, and deadlines. Finally, I would scedule what I need to get done for each day. It is very important that you keep a couple days for review before each exam. This is VITAL. Your brain needs a little review in order for information to stick. Going through the material the first few times primes the brain for memory study. That is, it makes it easier for the brain to transfer the material into short and long term memory. So always schedule and leave time for review.

Find a Place to Study Constantly
It is advisable to find a suitable place where you can study constantly. Go ahead and look for a place where you might feel comfortable digesting all the lessons you had for the day. Once you’ve found a place, stick to it. Shifting from one place to another will disrupt your rhythm and you’ll probably end up distracted by unfamiliar things happening in that new environment.

Study in short but regular sessions
Knowing that you can’t push a too much into your brain in just one sitting, it would be wise to dissect your lessons and create a study plan that allows you to study in regular short sessions. Say you’ve got a 50 pages of basic biology outlined for the whole month. It is suggested that you read over it 2-3 pages at a time. Another way to think of it is spend 50 minutes studying and then take a ten minute break. This will give you ample time to let everything sink in.

An important note is that if you fall asleep for the ten minutes, MAKE SURE that you set an alarm to wake up. So many students waste valuable time in bed. Its not that they actually need the sleep (although many times they do), but also because the body doesn’t want to expend the energy to study. You have to force yourself to study. (No one said it would be easy)

Take breaks and have enough sleep
Yes, I know I just told you not to waste time sleeping. Well, that’s only if you spend too much time doing it. As with any part of the body, the brain needs rest. In other words, you need sleep. Doctor’s say 8 hours a day is advisable and healthy so why don’t you go for that and not get ahead of yourself and declare you only need 4. Also, it be better if you take quick breaks while studying. You need to let your blood circulate so well so a few stretches will really help.

So have a good nights rest, but don’t spend the whole day napping. Force yourself to study and don’t be stupid by letting time slip away from you. Remember, the more time you let slip by, the less time you will have for the crutial review portion. Reviewing is key if you want good marks.

Keeping these study tips for exams in mind will guide you away from cramming and will drive towards that passing mark you’ve been longing for so long. You might also want to try a memory test software which will make studying a breeze and much more effective.

Knowing the effective study techniques for students and passing tests effortlessly.

Final exams are the epitome and the measuring stick that scales how much a student has progressed. Together with the level respect that comes with the phrase, fear is also associated with it. Finals are one of the most important and challenging moments in a student’s life. This is why it’s essential to know the effective study techniques for students so you don’t have cold sweats and black out 5 minutes before the exams.

Obviously, the real challenge is convincing yourself to study way ahead of time. If you always tell yourself that there’s plenty of more time before the exam, you probably end up cramming and trying to cover 7 chapters in just one night which we, of course, know as something that doesn’t work. Continuing on this path will result to failure which will open the university gates and help kick you out.

To prevent this dilemma from happening, you need to stop procrastinating and have some self discipline. You need to have the drive to study and relight that beacon of enthusiasm that you had back when you were a freshman. Ask yourself, why did you lose that fire? What happened? Once all your realizations sink in and you’ve finally gained your motivation back, it’s time to put you in the right track again and introduce study techniques for students.

Have fun studying
Studying for an exam or studying as a whole can be a fun and entertaining or painful and irritating depending on how you make it. Invite some friends over, listen to music or even go to the zoo and set up a tent with the koalas; do whatever it is that will make your study time entertaining while you read over your notes. Don’t restrict yourself within your room; go wherever you think might help you focus.

Make a schedule and stick to it
Students are always offered with distractions for a lot of things can be done within the campus. Often times, studying is misplaced by extracurricular activities. Now, to avoid the same events from reoccurring, always set an appointment with your books and notes. Make it a routine to fill up your planner with studying schedules for the month. By doing so, you’ll always have an excuse to say no.

Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review
Always start by surveying the chapters included in the lesson. By doing so, you will have an idea of which parts you’ll be able to digest and those which you will not. Once you’ve identified the hardest parts, try to ask yourself and consolidate answers from your classmates. You can then do further reading on the topic. Just be sure you comprehend what you read. After that, do a recap of what you’ve covered and challenge what you’ve learned.

The SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite and review) together with proper time management are the basic studying techniques for students. Enjoying yourself while you’re at it removes the tension and relaxes your brain for better comprehension. Combining these three make the best ways to study for a test. Yet this combination will take a lot of determination from the student which may lead him/her losing interest in the program.

To make things easier, a student should have his or her own memory test software. The software doubles as a notebook and an automated flash card. After the data has been recorded and category, the software then creates questions based on the categorizations. The answers are then assessed and the program determines the weak points of the student. Once found, the software will focus more on these weak points.

Finding the best way to study for a test

Frustration wells up every time your test results come up; your scores just never change, it is either a passing or a failing grade for you. Pressure is always there to do better, but studying seems to be not your strong point at all. On the other hand, you cannot forever rely on good luck and cramming sessions. In this kind of situation, never lose hope because knowing the best way to study for a test is your ticket out to being a failure.

Take Away Distractions

Studying does not only entail scanning or reading your notes, and then memorize them. One has to study effectively to get that “A” you are dreaming for a long time. However, before one starts to study, the first thing you should do is to rid your self of distractions completely. Concentration or focus is your main ingredient to understand your notes well. Turn off the TV and your PC; do not study near the telephone, just concentrate.

Light Snacking, Nothing Heavy

Getting the best out of your studying is the best way to study for a test and having a healthy cold snack while understanding those long notes will give you a boost in a fit way. Fruits and vegetables such as apple and celery are not only healthy but they can keep you awake because simply, these kinds of foods are cold. Even boring notes will not stop your energy as your body digests these healthy snacks.

Also, if you eat large meals, do it slowly while studying at the same time. Why? well, first off, if you eat a large meal all at once you will get tired and most likely go to sleep rather than go back to studying after. However, if you eat slowly while studying, you are forcing your brain to stay active while you digest and you have a much larger chance of staying awake while you study.

Little Breaks are Good

When you study, you have to go over your notes little by little, well it is an old cliché but reviewing notes on a day-to-day basis is a lot better than cramming your brains with information that eventually gives you a big headache in the end. It works especially if you review the things you have learned earlier that day. Following this tip will, not only give you time for other things but it makes you remember your lessons better. I would study for 50 minutes and take a break for ten minutes to let it sink in.

Schedule Properly

Another technique to get yourself ready for your tests is to make a schedule and the best way to study for a test is to study on schedule. It is important to follow your schedule, give equal time for your tests for the whole day so that you may able to have an idea on other subjects and not just one. Furthermore, waiting for midnight to study will get you sleepy, and while you are at this state, studying will not work.

Get Help From a Teacher or Peer

If self-studying does not work, then get help. Ask your teacher’s help, ask him or her when he or she is available and schedule consultation hours with your teacher. If you are not comfortable with your teacher study with a group or you can find someone smart to tutor you with things.

Books on memory are not just for the party-trick seekers and C-Grade students with A-grade ambitions, many of use skate through life heavily dependent upon the many devices, both written and electronic, to allow us to keep track of our busy schedules. What would we all do without these iPads, cell phones, electronic diaries, Post-it notes, shopping lists written on the back envelopes etc…? Well if we wanted to, quite a lot actually.

Books on memory improvement can help anyone; from simple little memory tasks such as a shopping list, to complex memory enhancement techniques. Not many people have a use for remembering the value of Pi to nineteen thousand decimal places, that’s for savants and Guinness World Record attempters – Many people do however have a use for remembering what they are supposed to be doing tomorrow, or maybe a telephone number that was given in haste, that’s where books on memory improvement can really help out.

Here are a few books I located on Amazon that have good reviews:

Moonwalking with Einstein

This book called Moonwalking with Einstein has sold many copies on Amazon and seems to have one of the highest ratings with reviers.

Here are some of their thoughts:

“Moonwalking with Einstein goes far beyond remembering the names of acqaintances. It can help make your daily life easier, aiding you when you try to find lost items – or keep them from getting lost in the first place- and actually train you to find ways to improve your memory.”

“I’d learned a mnemonic device to aid memorization decades ago while in college, and found it to be helpful, but for some reason I’d abandoned the technique once I graduated. But Moonwalking with Einstein expands the mnemonic technique I learned back then by use of something of which I’d never heard: the “Memory Palace.” The Memory Palace exploits our inherent skill for remembering images and spatial locations, harnesses these two abilities we all posses in abundance, and relates them to the memorization of numbers, lists and assortments of other difficult to remember items. The amazing thing is that the Memory Palace not only makes memorization easy, it also makes it fun.”

The Memory Book

Here is another one of the memory books that seems to have very good ratings on Amazon. Go to their main site for more reviews, but I’ll put down a couple of their responses below:

“This book has all the memory techniques that are typically taught in memory courses and other memory books. Even if they are sometimes introduced by other names, all of the techniques are variants and combinations of word-substitution (mostly used for foreign words, but also people’s names and words that can’t easily be pictured), link, peg, loci (sometimes called Roman Room technique) and phonetic (letter for number substitution) systems. The book is mostly re-hashed information that has been presented earlier (even by Lorayne himself), but the writing style makes it a book worth keeping.”

“I have always considered my memory to be rather poor. But after using the VERY SIMPLE techniques in this book, I am capable of memorizing things many people would deem near impossible, with minimal effort. The first exercise listed ten words: Airplane, tree, envelope, earring, bucket, sing, basketball, salami, nose, and star. Then provided a child-like way to not only remember all ten words but also in the sequence in which they were presented. Some might, at first glance, think that’s simple, but try it without a method! I had them memorized in about fifteen minutes and now they seem to be permanently etched in my brain; that was over a week ago and I just wrote them in this review from memory! The next exercise was a list of thirty words, most of which were complex and I had never seen before. That might impress some people, but these methods have real practical applications.”

Keep in mind that there are some bad reviews aswell; they are not all positive. So make sure to check them out yourself.

More on Memory

The long haul
There are several different types of memory; sensory, short-term and long-term. Of these 3 types, it is possible to improve both long- and short-term memory by utilizing proven memory enhancement methods. Sensory memory cannot be trained or improved due to its nature. Sensory memory in contrast to short-term memory is where the brain receives sensory input, and within about 12 milliseconds makes a memory decision, the capacity of which is defined in everybody by their brain structure and cannot be altered. Short-term memory, in contrast, is where the brain is allowed to repeat or structure a sensory input, whereby practice can make these memories more robust. So the real difference between them is the amount of time the subject is exposed to the sensory input and allowed to assimilate information; so you cannot improve your skills at turning over playing cards in a deck for a glimpse at each card, then another and so on, and trying to improve the number that you can recall correctly afterwards. About ten is good for most people. Practicing this type of memory over and over will not produce any measurable improvement.

Short-term
Short-term memory can be improved greatly though. Given the same deck of cards, and time to study the sequence it is possible to remember the sequence of the whole deck with some practice and some clever memory techniques. This kind of memory improvement does not just suit those who like to do party tricks. It’s quite conceivable that that long shopping list that you painstakingly write could be committed to memory quite simply by using some fairly simple memory techniques. Short-term memory is the most common memory that we use from day-to-day and enhancing it can have quite a positive Impact on daily life. There’s nothing more exciting thing being reminded that you’ve forgotten something and remembering to program your iPad is just the tip of the iceberg. Improving short-term memory will automatically mean improving your long-term memory, although the 2 memories are stored differently in the brain.

Remember to pick up the kids…
Training the brain to store information more effectively can make a huge difference to how we work interact socially and how well we are educated. For those who just need a little help, books on memory can prevent all those embarrassing lapses – you can make forgetting that important appointment, grocery item, or even to pick up the kids after school, a thing of the past… Just a memory.
